What is the HSK 3.0 character list?

HSK One separates the two character inventories defined by the current syllabus: characters learners are expected to recognize and the smaller set used for writing requirements. They are related, but they are not the same list.

Recognition characters vs writing characters

Recognition

The official level inventory of characters learners should recognize. HSK One currently exposes 3,088 recognition records.

Writing

The separate official writing inventory contains 1,200 records and is used by the Writing product.

HSK 1–2 writing band

The official source combines HSK 1 and HSK 2 writing into one 100-character band; HSK One does not invent separate official counts.

HSK 7–9

The advanced recognition and writing inventories remain combined because that is how the current source groups them.

How to study an HSK character

Start with the character in a real word, then connect recognition to pronunciation and meaning through the Vocabulary lists. For characters that have writing practice, use stroke-order Watch, Trace and Write instead of treating recognition and handwriting as the same skill.

HSK 1 also has a quality-gated set of individual character pages that connect a Hanzi to related Level 1 words and stroke-order practice. The site does not automatically create an entity page for every recognition record.

Official source and supplemental character data

Recognition and writing membership come from the current HSK 3.0 source data. Stroke paths, stroke counts and dictionary-style meanings used on supported character pages are supplemental learning data and are identified separately from official HSK fields.

See the HSK 3.0 reference and editorial policy for source boundaries.
