Step 4 · Sentence patterns
Build usable sentences
Study the pattern, then replace the example information with details from your own situation.
老 as a familiar prefix
老 + surname / familiar labelBefore some surnames or familiar labels, 老 can form a familiar way to refer to a person. In this use it is not simply describing someone as old.
Common noun-building suffixes
base + 家 / 子 / 员HSK 3 includes common noun-building endings such as 家, 子 and 员. Treat the resulting word as one lexical unit and learn it in context.
Degree adverbs for more precise descriptions
比较 / 更 / 特别 / 挺 / 有些 + adjectiveUse a degree adverb before an adjective to make a description more precise instead of relying only on 很.
Multiple modifiers before a noun
demonstrative / description / verb phrase + 的 + nounSeveral pieces of identifying information can appear before a noun. Keep the noun at the end and use 的 where the modifier needs it.
Expanded comparison patterns
A 比 B 更 / 还 + adjective; A 跟 B 一样; A 不比 B + adjectiveHSK 3 expands 比 comparisons and adds ways to express equality or deny an expected difference.
