LEARN IN CONTEXT
Read and listen across several real contexts
This lesson uses the number and type of texts that fit the topic. Learn the same language across different situations instead of forcing everything into one dialogue.
Core textShort article
Why this text is here: Teach learners to separate online visibility from population-wide behavior.

Online platforms can make a new phrase, product or lifestyle visible very quickly. But heavy discussion is not the same as most people behaving that way in real life. A topic may become highly visible because of recommendation systems, a popular event or strong interest from a particular group.
When analyzing a social phenomenon, separate online discussion, personal experience and broader surveys. Each provides information, but they answer different questions. Do not generalize about all young people, cities or families from a few people nearby or one popular video.

Why this text is here: Retain the existing balanced discussion about online trends, facilities, income, family and regional conditions.
Recently many young people have discussed reducing consumption. Do you think it's a long-term idea or a short-term trend?
I think public facilities affect lifestyles too. For example, after subway access improves, some people don't buy cars.

So social phenomena can't be analyzed with a single cause or only the loudest online voices.

Why this text is here: Continue Chen Yu's reporting arc through a new social-media investigation about samples, claims and verification.

One day, Chen Yu saw a very popular video claiming that young people no longer wanted to join offline activities. Many comments agreed. She did not immediately put the claim into a report; she first checked what evidence the video used to reach its conclusion.
Later she found that the video had interviewed only a dozen or so people at one event. Chen Yu decided to treat it as one example of a phenomenon, not proof that all young people were the same. She then contacted several different types of events and compared what participants and organizers said.
